ABOUT BRINGING THE
OUTSIDE IN
Collaboration with Photo Artist Dahlia Dreszer
Blurring the line between indoors and out, this living installation transforms the space into a lush sanctuary where Birds of Paradise, Peace Lilies, Philodendrons ‘Jose Buono’ , and Burle Marx plants breathe life into the gallery. A fleeting homage to nature’s resilience, it invites viewers to experience the wild beauty of the outside, inside.
Our biggest challenge was to create an immersive tropical and lush environment without taking away from Dreszer's art.
We really wanted to incorporate flowers and pops of colors within our temporary landscape to fuze the tropical foliage with Dahlia’s flowers which are a main theme throughout her pieces. The exhibition lasting 3 months, our initial thought was that we would have to inevitably use artificial flowers if we wanted the flowers to last throughout the entirety of the show. The idea of having plastic flowers shipped from across the globe within our plants did not sit right with us.
That is when we made the decision to use live flowers in the installation, which tied in perfectly with Dahlia Dreszer's pieces where she often uses "rescued flowers" in her installations.
When walking through the space, the visitor will see flowers from all stages of life and will be faced with the naked, raw, and complete truth that is life: nothing is meant to last forever, flowers are not meant to last, and it is their ephemeralness that makes them so wonderfully romantic.
By using real flowers that will wither over the duration of the exhibition, we are saying loudly: perfection is the opposite of nature.
Embrace the mess. Savor the blooms. Be grateful for the withering.
